|A Weird one |
By Amy Long
|This was a little weird. I got a call for a wedding on a Friday for that following Monday. The bride was 83 and the groom 84. The groom had had a stroke and couldn't be there to get the license, so I had to go down and sign for it with the bride.|
I showed up to the ceremony place itself (at the groom's retirement facility) and after a very brief ceremony, I began looking over the license to sign. Just then, the owner of the facility tells me I have a phone call. Me?
To make a long story short, the groom had been declared incompetent by the court and I had to talk to the conservator's office, the conservator herself, then their attorney (who wasn't very nice) and everyone was very upset that these two people were getting married.
I ended up leaving without signing anything because the bride has to go to court for the right to get married to the groom.
The whole thing was a bit weird. I guess a new standard question should be if both parties are competent enough to be married!
