Last Minute Wedding
By Rev. Erica Nash

Hi Amy-

I just performed a wedding on the beach tonight. It was wonderful. It was a short notice wedding, they called me yesterday lol. They came in from Georgia on vacation and saw my website, decided to get married while they were here, and we pulled it off at 7 pm my time at Paradise Beach in Indian atlantic at sunset. It was beautiful. My best friend came with me and took pictures, and I managed to not mess it up lol. I gave them a packet with copies of credentials, a wedding certificate, and a keepsake of their ceremony. Hopefully they will prosper and be blessed. Hope this finds you well-

Blessings,

Erica

Wedding Stories

Funny Couple
By Rev. Amy Long
I had a funny wedding this weekend.

As I waited for the groom and the best man to walk down the aisle, I was chatting with the bride at a distance. When it seemed enough time had passed, I walked down the aisle as well. When I got there, there was no groom or best man to be found.

I looked in the front row...and there they sat!

They looked like guests waiting for the main event.

I said, "Did you want to get married today?" He said yes, so I said, "Then get up here!" He did and everyone laughed, including the best man, who continued to sit in the front row. I said, "And you are the best man, right?" He nodded and I told him to get up with me too.

Then when the bride walked down the aisle, gave her dad a kiss and had the groom shake hands with her dad, she leaned in to kiss him!

I jumped in with a bit of waving and a, "Hey, hey now. You're not married yet!"

It was a crack-up! They were a very amused couple and had a great day.

Little Wedding Things
By Rev. Nila @ VIP Weddings
Wedding Stories

Dear Amy,

I've been involved in weddings for 35 years as a floral designer, bridal gowns and tuxes, wedding chapel and receptions in central Minnesota. I have enjoyed providing a one stop wedding shop for those couples who would like something and can't find it. In addition to weddings in an outdoor ceremony, I have experiences with them in a hot air balloon, our horse drawn carriage and other lakeside ceremonies.

The well known unity candle lighting does well indoors but not so well on a windy day outside. We set up candlight wedding aisles in churches and halls and torches in the aisles for outdoor weddings but the actual ceremony presented some problems. I now have a sand ceremony that works nicely and provides a lasting rememberance of the wedding. Provide a table waist height or a little higher so guests can see. Make up your own words about the two becoming one---or the sands of time together etc.

The 3"x12" glass cylinder is engraved around the top edge with "Our Wedding Day" and the couples names and date.(I have these here if you need a source).

On the right side is a container with - let's say blue sand that the groom pours half into the bottom of the cylinder. On the left side is a container with - let's say pink sand that the bride then pours half into the container on top of the blue sand. Then together they pour the top third full of sand creating a pretty lavender design with areas of blue and pink. The sands are joined together forever. Later melted wax is poured on top of the lavender sand and a votive candle is placed in the middle. This seals in the sand and the candle is easily replaced. It's nice for a couple to burn on an anniversary or any day. It would be a real keepsake for their bedroom.

Wedding Stories

By Rev. Carol M. C. Duclos

Q: How'd your first wedding go?

A: Great! I used bits and pieces of several different ceremonies from a couple of books I got from the ministry. The bride and groom loved it, and I felt really good about it. Got real nervous when I realized they were going to tape it, but calmed down quickly.

I checked with the Secretary of State's office and the Health Department (Vital Statistics). Both indicated that as long as I was in good standing, I am able to perform wedding ceremonies in the State of Rhode Island. Filing the license was simple.

Last year I almost performed a wedding ceremony where the bride was wiccan and the groom a catholic. They ultimately decided that they were going to hold off on getting married. I did spend some time researching the wiccan religion. Never thought to look at the ULC website. That would have been an interesting ceremony to put together.

I am looking forward to doing more.

Carol

Wedding Stories

By Rev. Spencer Dethlefs
The Ring that Almost Wasn't

I did a wedding in mid-May of this year, and it was only my second. Being the amateur at them that I am, I was nervous anyway. This was the largest wedding I think I've ever attended; 160+ people were there for the ceremony.

I was sweating so much, that when I went to turn the pages during the ceremony itself, I didn't realize I had skipped over the ring ceremony. I didn't notice that this had happened and when I got to the end of the ceremony, I mentioned something about the rings and the bride shot me a look that could stop a beating heart. I sighed, and turned back and started from the ring ceremony. Everyone laughed.

After the ceremony had ended, everyone came up to me and said that my error was the best part of the ceremony. It was so tense and so serious and this just served the purpose of calming the nerves and showing that even a minister is human. It surprised me, but I was extremely grateful (and happy) that this didn't anger anyone.

WOW!!!

Amy, I know you already know how wonderful it feels to conduct a beautiful ceremony but I just finished my first wedding and I can't begin to describe how I feel! Thanks to your books I put together a wonderful wedding ceremony for some very close friends.

There was not a dry eye in the place. I couldn't believe how many of the men came up to me afterward, their faces drenched with tears, telling me they had NEVER before been to a more beautiful wedding. I thank you so much for helping me to give this great couple a perfect wedding ceremony!

Thank you!

Losing Power
I just did a wedding this weekend that was quite interesting. I was the DJ.

The bride and groom changed their first dance song at the last minute to a song that I didn't have. We found a substitute, but it still bothered me, so I looked through my CDs and found an unmarked one that I'd gotten from another wedding. I decided to go through it and to my surprise, #5 was their song!

Later, after the ceremony, we went back to the hotel to discover that there was no power in the building due to a short in the wiring. Ugh. The staff lit candles to eat by and I pulled out all my extension cords, ran them across the room, out the window, through the open lot and into the neighbor's kitchen.

The whole event was like that, but the bride and groom took it in stride and it turned into a success. The power was never completely restored so the guests had to stay elsewhere, but it all was a great experience in rolling with the flow.

Wedding Stories

Dear Reverend Amy,

I officiated my first wedding on April 12, 2010. I had no idea that in helping the couple that I would feel so physically, mentally and emotionally drained. I mean I got home with my wife (the matron of honor in the same wedding) and just flopped on the bed and suddenly the exhaustion hit me like an avalanche! I couldn't move or anything. Finally, my wife cajoled me into taking a shower and that did the trick. Don't get me wrong: I'm not complaining at all; in fact, I was riding the crest of that wave for well over a week and a half! Nothing could go wrong! I found it rewarding in a way I'd never experienced before.

Of course I was nervous about performing the wedding, but I'd bulwarked myself by deciding firmly to read my part like the late, great Walter Kronkite. I was outside reading the work for about the third or forth time, I looked up and in all earnestness said the Shepherd's Prayer (irreverent, yes; but earnest none the less) when the DJ came out. We made introductions, and I explained that it was my first wedding and that there had been no rehearsal (no, I'm not kidding). Fortunately, things went so well that those who complimented me on the service were very surprised that it was my first wedding. I couldn't have done it without the tools the ULC gave me.

Thanks!

Wedding Ceremonies

By Rev. Sally Christie

I imagine it has happened to you. The couple looks you in the eye and says, "this is going to be a formal event." So, you make sure you are dressed in your best, weather permitting, dress. Robe on a hanger, you show up to find the best man in a formal jacket with a rock and roll t-shirt under.

People are amusing.

At least the mothers and grandparents were dressed up.

Blessed Be!

Wedding Stories
By Rev. Jim Hall

First of all I only marry people I have known for a long time.

I put together a wedding information page so when friends ask me to marry them, I tell them to go look at the web page Http://ourworld.cs.com/ULCRevHall
and look at my ceremony and see if they like it and choose what parts they want included.

I always print out many copies of the customized ceremony usually on pink paper, roll it up and secure with Wal-Mart gold or silver colored rings from their crafts department and have available at the ceremony.

Wedding Vows

By Rev. Deb K.
Universal Life Church

During the wedding rehearsal, the groom approached the pastor with an unusual offer.

"Look, I'll give you $100 if you'll change the wedding vows. Just leave out the part about me promising to 'love, honor and obey' and 'forsake all others, being faithful to her forever,'" He passed the minister a $100 bill and walked away satisfied.

It is now the day of the wedding, and the bride and groom have moved to that part of the ceremony where the vows are exchanged. When it comes time for the groom's vows, the pastor looks the young man in the eye
and says:

"Will you promise to prostrate yourself before her, obey her every command and wish, serve her breakfast in bed every morning of your life and swear eternally before God and your lovely wife that you will not ever even look at another woman, as long as you both shall live?"

The trapped groom gulped, looked around, and said in a tiny voice, "Yes."

After the wedding, the groom pulled the pastor aside and hissed, "I thought we had a deal."

The pastor put the $100 bill into the groom's hand and whispered back, "She made me a much better offer."

Wedding Stories

By Rev. Adam Rocke

Nothing unusual at all. It was frantically put together, but came off without any hitch so to speak, at all, and was so much fun to preside at.

I can see why you do such and got the feeling when using the guide that you meant for it to be joyous and serious all in one. I made it truly non denominational, which is what the couple asked for. I mentioned the Great Spirit when reciting the Cherokee poem and it was an outside setting in a beautiful garden at the Bride's mother's home.

I actually got several requests to do others and many compliments, which for me is hard to accept. I attribute that to your excellent guide and I designed the ceremony using your hints and help. You should actually receive the credit as the guide was so invaluable and it provided me great confidence. And, I tried a little fun and humor and just serious enough. One young lady told me after, just about the time she was going to cry, I did something fun and it made the whole ceremony perfect. I really felt very special to be of such service and share faith. As I indicated, I used the Cherokee poem at the end and it was so well received by everyone in attendance.

I can honestly attest to the fact that the information you have provided is exactly what is appropriate and the bride, groom and their families and guests all commented as to how well it went and came across. THANK YOU!

My First Wedding
By Rev. Marcus Greenwood

I became a ULC Minister as part of my own spiritual journey. I believe that we are all called to minister to each other. There are so many opportunities to do good in this world, to help each other, and to provide spiritual and emotional support to each other. Being a ULC Minister provides me with the legal support and credential to help further that goal. I was recently asked by a friend to officiate at her wedding, which was held December 1, 2007. I was truly honored to be asked. I would not have been able to share so directly as they committed their lives together without my ministerial credential. I have been a ULC Minister for more than a year, and this was my first opportunity to officiate at a wedding. I am truly grateful to my friend for providing me with an opportunity to minister to her and her finance, now husband, on that very special day.
