By Rev. Spencer Dethlefs The Ring that Almost Wasn't |
I did a wedding in mid-May of this year, and it was only my second. Being the amateur at them that I am, I was nervous anyway. This was the largest wedding I think I've ever attended; 160+ people were there for the ceremony. I was sweating so much, that when I went to turn the pages during the ceremony itself, I didn't realize I had skipped over the ring ceremony. I didn't notice that this had happened and when I got to the end of the ceremony, I mentioned something about the rings and the bride shot me a look that could stop a beating heart. I sighed, and turned back and started from the ring ceremony. Everyone laughed. After the ceremony had ended, everyone came up to me and said that my error was the best part of the ceremony. It was so tense and so serious and this just served the purpose of calming the nerves and showing that even a minister is human. It surprised me, but I was extremely grateful (and happy) that this didn't anger anyone. -Rev.
